🌳 Restoring Landscapes, Strengthening Livelihoods: RSI’s Afforestation Drive in Kibaale District – Kasimbi Sub County

Climate resilience begins at the grassroots. In Kasimbi Sub County, Ruta Serenity Initiative (RSI) is working hand in hand with local farmers to restore degraded landscapes through structured afforestation efforts that combine environmental conservation with household economic empowerment.

Building Local Capacity Through Community Nursery Beds
As part of our long-term environmental protection strategy, RSI has so far supported two community-managed nursery beds in Kasimbi Sub County. These nurseries serve as local hubs for raising high-quality tree seedlings while also creating income-generating opportunities for community members involved in seedling production and management.
To date, the two nurseries have collectively distributed 30,000 seedlings to farmers — a significant milestone toward RSI’s ambitious target of 100,000 seedlings planted by the end of 2027.
This phased approach ensures quality control, farmer engagement, and proper follow-up support to maximize survival and long-term impact.
Promising Survival Rates and Growing Community Ownership
Encouragingly, several beneficiary farmers are reporting an average survival rate of over 65% — a strong indicator of both proper planting practices and post-planting care. RSI continues to provide technical guidance on:
Site preparation and proper spacing
Early-stage watering and mulching
Protection against grazing and fire
Monitoring and maintenance practices
The emphasis is not only on tree planting, but on tree growing — ensuring that seedlings mature into productive assets that contribute to ecological restoration and improved livelihoods.
Environmental and Socio-Economic Impact
The afforestation initiative contributes to:
🌱 Reduced soil erosion and improved soil fertility🌱 Increased carbon sequestration and climate mitigation🌱 Diversified household income through timber and agroforestry systems🌱 Enhanced watershed protection and ecosystem restoration
By strengthening local nursery enterprises and equipping farmers with knowledge and seedlings, RSI is embedding environmental stewardship directly within communities.
A Long-Term Commitment to Landscape Restoration
Our target of 100,000 seedlings by 2027 reflects a deliberate, scalable strategy aligned with Uganda’s climate resilience and environmental conservation priorities. The work in Kasimbi Sub County demonstrates how localized action can generate measurable environmental impact while supporting rural livelihoods.
At RSI, afforestation is more than planting trees — it is restoring hope, rebuilding ecosystems, and creating sustainable pathways for future generations.
Contributing to RSI’s Broader Reforestation Strategy
The work in Kasimbi Sub County feeds into RSI’s broader reforestation strategy across multiple districts. Through coordinated efforts in Kibaale District, Ngora District, and Butebo District, RSI has now supported the planting of over 120,000 trees to date.
This cumulative achievement reflects a scalable landscape restoration model that integrates:
🌳 One seedling.🌳 One farmer.🌳 One restored landscape at a time.
