Keeping Water Flowing: A Sustainable Community Model

In Uganda’s rural communities, safe water access dep

ends on more than drilling boreholes. Sustainability requires skilled local technicians and strong community systems to keep water points functional.
At Ruta Serenity Initiative (RSI), we combine both.
Our trained handpump mechanics provide preventive maintenance and rapid repairs, reducing downtime and ensuring families are not forced back to unsafe water sources. Every repair restores more than functionality — it safeguards health, dignity, and productivity.
Equally important is our governance model. RSI integrates Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) as Water User Committees, anchoring water point treasuries within trusted, transparent community savings structures. This ensures maintenance funds are mobilized, safeguarded, and readily available when repairs are needed.
By aligning technical expertise with community-led financial accountability, RSI is building resilient rural water systems that endure beyond projects.
Safe water does not just flow — it is sustained.
