A Buzzing Future in Kahunge

In the rolling hills of Kahunge Sub‑County, Kamwenge District, beekeeping has long been part of rural life. Families kept traditional hives high in the trees, harvesting honey with smoke and courage. The yields were small, and the risks were high — many farmers recall painful stings and honey lost to pests or poor storage.

When RSI introduced modern beekeeping, the story began to change. Thirteen farmers came together to learn new practices, gathering under mango trees and in community halls to explore modern hives, protective gear, and safe harvesting. “We used to fear the bees,” one farmer shared, “but now we work with them.” With improved hives designed for easier management, the group discovered that colonies could thrive with less disturbance, producing cleaner, larger volumes of honey.

Women and youth found new opportunities too. RSI encouraged them to take part in training, and soon they were leading hive inspections and organizing honey collection days. “I never thought I could manage bees,” said a young mother, “but now I sell honey and wax, and my children’s school fees are paid.”

The impact has rippled beyond the hives. Pollination has boosted crop yields, and households now see beekeeping not just as tradition but as a business. Farmers proudly bottle their honey, some experimenting with value addition like beeswax candles and balms.

Today, Kahunge’s 13 beekeepers speak of resilience and pride. As group member Kiconco Costance remarked: “Our bees are our partners. Th

ey give us honey, they help our crops, and they remind us that with knowledge, even small things can change our lives.”
